Understanding the Role of the QDRO
A Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) is a court order required to divide qualified retirement plans like the Ias/triune 401(k) Plan. It recognizes the joint ownership of retirement funds accrued during marriage and instructs the plan administrator to assign a portion of those funds to a former spouse (legally called the “alternate payee”).
Importantly, simply stating in your divorce decree that your ex-spouse is entitled to half the plan isn’t enough. A separate QDRO must be drafted, approved, and submitted to the plan administrator.
