Employee Contributions vs. Employer Contributions
In a 401(k) like the Principle Business Enterprises, Inc.. 401(k) Profit Sharing Plan, the total account balance may include:
- Employee pre-tax or Roth contributions
- Employer profit-sharing or matching contributions
When dividing the account, both types of contributions can be included—but here’s the catch: employer contributions might not be fully vested at the time of divorce. If you’re the alternate payee, you’ll want your attorney to identify how much of the employer portion is actually available to you under the plan’s vesting schedule.
