A QDRO (Qualified Domestic Relations Order) is a court order issued during a divorce that divides qualified retirement plans, like the Kaufman Food Services 401(k) Plan. It allows for the distribution of retirement funds without triggering the early withdrawal penalties or tax consequences you’d normally face if pulling money from a 401(k).
The QDRO specifies the alternate payee (usually the ex-spouse) and how the benefits should be divided—whether by percentage, flat dollar amount, or a combination of both. Once the QDRO is approved by the court and accepted by the plan administrator, the division can be carried out.
