Contribution Type and Account Separation
401(k) plans often include more than one type of account:
- Traditional (Pre-tax) 401(k): Contributions made before taxes; taxes are paid upon withdrawal.
- Roth 401(k): Contributions made after-tax; qualified withdrawals are tax-free.
In a QDRO, each account type must be addressed separately. If the participant has both types, you’ll need to specify how each account will be divided.
