Employee and Employer Contributions
Most 401(k) accounts include both employee deferrals (the portion the worker chose to contribute) and employer contributions (match or profit-sharing). A common trap is assuming the entire balance is divisible. However, employer contributions may be subject to vesting schedules, often based on years of service. If the participant isn’t fully vested, those unvested amounts may be forfeited and not available for division.
